Walther the Whale
Our community ambassador, Walther, the wise and witty whale of Waikola is leading the way with our local outreach to the children and families of the village.
Help Walther celebrate and encourage Waikoloa’s students! Aloha, neighbors! If you found us through November’s edition of The Breeze, welcome! Mahalo for taking an interest in Walther the Whale’s “Navigators of the Month” contest at Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School. Together, we can help our 700+ students grow in kindness, respect, responsibility, gratitude and other qualities that strengthen our entire community!
Each month, all 40 homerooms and advisories at WaikÅloa Elementary & Middle School are invited to work together on a different character trait. In partnership with the school’s dedicated counseling team, Walther challenges students to:
• Create their own one-sentence definition of the month’s trait.
• Share a real example of that trait being demonstrated between students in their classroom.
• Write a creative Walther the Whale message about the trait in 20 words or fewer!
Students use their own ideas-no dictionary or AI-generated definitions. The goal is to help them understand good character, recognize it in one another and put it into practice! School administrators judge the entries, and the winning Walther message is displayed for our community to enjoy.
CELEBRATING THEIR SUCCESS
Each month’s winning classrooms receive:
FIRST PLACE: A pizza party, $10 Pudgee Panda gift cards for students, and $300 for their teacher to use in the classroom!
SECOND PLACE: Special student prizes and $150 for their teacher to use in the classroom!
Each homeroom or advisory may earn one first-place award and one second-place award during the school year, giving more students an opportunity to be celebrated.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Walther’s contest is made possible through Waikoloa Lutheran Church’s school outreach and the generosity of caring community partners. Individuals, families, businesses and community organizations are invited to join us!
• Give any amount toward classroom awards, pizza parties and student prizes.
• Sponsor a $150 second-place classroom award or a $300 first-place classroom award.
• Contact us about contributing gift cards, student prizes or support for a pizza party.
• Share this post and invite others to help our Navigators grow!
Every contribution helps celebrate positive choices, encourage our teachers and remind students that their community cares about who they are becoming.

EXCELLENCE IS A TEAM EFFORT!
This funny, insightful and lovable humpback whale has decided the 3000 mile swim back to Alaska was too long this year, so Walther decided to stick around the Big Island and get to know our wonderful Waikoloa Village Ohana. He has been a longtime friend of Waikoloa Lutheran Church, so he is making himself comfortable on their future church property. Being the friendly and curious humpback whale that he is, Walther is now at the perfect location to wave His fin at all who walk or drive by on Paniolo Avenue, and share a bit of wisdom or a chuckle with His new Waikoloa neighbors. Visit his Facebook page regularly to see what Walther has spouted each and every week. Hopefully we will all learn something useful, or at least crack a grin, groan and roll our eyes at His fishy humor! Welcome to Waikoloa, Walther!
A Bit More About Walther
Your neighbors at Waikoloa Lutheran Church are making final plans to build our permanent facilities on our property and hope to break ground within a year. In the meantime, we wanted to find a meaningful way to encourage and support our wonderful village. We all know that we can never get enough of art, humor and wisdom, so Walther volunteered to fulfill all three with the hope that this expressive work of art will always succeed in “breaching the surface of silliness and diving into the depths of wisdom”.
Not “Wally”. Not “Walter”. It’s “Walther”! Just so you know, Walther gets his unique name from C.F.W.
